Last summer the National Institutes of Health decided to end a program started by Tony Fauci in 2020. Called the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases, or CREID, the initiative faced closure because officials saw it as unsafe for Americans and a poor use of public funds.
University lobbyists fought back hard. They worked behind the scenes to add special language into a key Congressional spending bill. This move forced the NIH to keep the program running despite earlier concerns.
