Yet this practice has long been legal across the country. The attention around the order appears overstated because it brings no fresh rights or freedoms for personal use.
What stays firmly restricted is selling any of that meat to others. Strict government inspections and permits control all commercial meat sales to protect public health. The order does nothing to ease those rules or open new markets. Farmers must still follow the same long-standing limits if they want to sell products.
Observers view the proposal as a small gesture after the arrival of 300,000 metric tons of low-cost imported ground beef. This influx came in without tariffs and at subsidized prices. Many ranchers feel the pressure from this competition. The order may calm some concerns but delivers no meaningful relief for sales or processing.
