In November 1933 Franklin Roosevelt gave official recognition to the Soviet Union. At that moment Stalin was starving the people of Ukraine in the Holodomor. Yet many in the West chose to ignore the suffering and believe Soviet promises instead.
A number of journalists and visitors traveled to Moscow to praise the regime. Walter Duranty of the New York Times denied the famine and covered up Stalin's crimes. These useful idiots helped spread false ideas about communism around the world.
